DGARTES closed applications for the six competitions in its new sustained support programme on 6 October — the scheme through which Portugal funds its arts organisations through to 2030. Music and opera receive €10.92 million of the €72.84 million these competitions share out.
What happened
The Direção-Geral das Artes will put €191.56 million into the 2027-2030 sustained support cycle. The figure splits in two: €118.72 million to renew 125 four-year sustained support contracts, and €72.84 million for the six new competitions, split between two-year and four-year categories. Applications were open until 6 October 2026; DGARTES's announcement was published on 24 August and updated on 1 October.
Activity plans under the two-year category cover 1 January 2027 to 31 December 2028. Those under the four-year category run from 1 January 2027 to 31 December 2030.
Here's the breakdown by area, using each competition's official name. The totals by category are our own calculation.
| Area | Total | Two-year | Four-year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Teatro | €20.58M | €11.1M | €9.48M |
| Programação | €18M | €9.72M | €8.28M |
| Música e ópera | €10.92M | €5.88M | €5.04M |
| Cruzamento disciplinar, circo, arte de rua e artes digitais | €8.94M | €4.86M | €4.08M |
| Artes visuais | €7.74M | €4.14M | €3.6M |
| Dança | €6.66M | €3.54M | €3.12M |
| Total put to tender | €72.84M | €39.24M | €33.6M |
Within the two-year share for music and opera — €5.88 million — €4.44 million goes to music projects and €1.44 million to opera.
The breakdown, in percentages
The figures below are our own calculations, based on those numbers. The €118.72 million in renewals account for 62% of the cycle: money committed before any competition was decided. The remaining 38% was what was actually up for grabs.
Of that money put to tender, music and opera take 15%. That's equivalent to 53% of the €20.58 million for theatre. Opera sits lower still: its €1.44 million is 24% of the two-year pot it shares with music.
Portugal isn't an isolated case: we've also covered the cultural subsidy cuts in Flanders and the CNM's festival support in France. Neither source has yet published a results timeline, and that's the only thing that will turn these percentages into actual names.
What to check
If you're programming in Portugal with organisations from this cycle, two things to check. First, which category the body you're working with falls under: a two-year plan covers 2027 and 2028, a four-year one runs to 2030, and that sets the horizon for signing a tour or a residency. Second, sustained support isn't the only route: in 2026 DGARTES backed 77 music and opera projects with €2.195 million through the Programa de Apoio a Projetos, a separate instrument.
Public funding doesn't change box-office obligations. For that, it's worth checking Portugal's performance law and the refund of booking fees and how to sell a ticket in Portugal.
